THE EXPERIENCE
You will stay in a quiet area with little traffic, but nearby when darkness closes in over Nollendorfplatz, (gay) life really gets going. In the 1930s, Nollendorfplatz was a centre of entertainment and culture, home to gay artists and writers, with an almost Parisian flair. People came from far and wide to visit the popular Metropol Theatre and to admire the steel and glass dome which crowned the station. In the days of the Weimar Republic in the 20's and early 30's it was the hub of the fashionable gay and lesbian community in Berlin . The liberal environment in Berlin at that time allowed people to be proud of their sexuality and this was reflected in the number of gay cafés, nightclubs and brothels, with theatre pieces and art often dealing with homosexual themes. Destroyed during the war, Nollendorf has come back to gay life, in full, with plenty of foreigners living and staying there, with many, if not most of them, openly gay. |
